Had the pleasure today of meeting former Ravens head coach Brian Billick, who was giving a talk at my school.
After a larger talk at noon, Billick met with a smaller group of Communications majors. Three things surprised me:
1) Forgot how tall he is (Billick was a tight end at Brigham Young University and briefly in the NFL, after all)
2) Was shocked at how large that Super Bowl XXXV ring is (Last time I saw one that up close was on Jonathan Ogden at Bar Baltimore in Power Plant Live three years ago. Suffice it to say, the ring looked smaller on J.O.)
3) Maybe even more shocked at how quickly Billick has made the headfirst leap into becoming a full-fledged member of the media
He's part owner of the Balmer-based WNST radio station and website, a colorman for FOX Sports TV and a regular contributor on the NFL Network.
Guess I shouldn't be that surprised, since Billick said he graduated with a Master's in Journalism from BYU.
Everyone from my father to The Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston predicted Billick would thrive as a member of the media, and clearly he is at the moment. My question to you, reader, is this:
Should Billick even consider re-entering the coaching ranks? He boasts a winning record, a Super Bowl ring and was the director of one of the finest offenses in NFL history while with Minnesota. He probably wouldn't have a real tough time finding a job in the next couple years.
But given all that, what's his motivation to get back under the hot lights of coaching in the NFL? Does he really have anything left to prove?
